About the League

Coed softball has been a staple of the Marshalltown Softball Association for years, bringing men and women together for organized Friday night league play in a competitive but social environment.

The league uses different ball sizes depending on who is batting: men hit a 14-inch softball and women hit an 11-inch softball. Summer and fall leagues give teams two opportunities each year to compete and enjoy time at the complex.

The number of games, season format, standings, and postseason structure are determined each year based on registration and the number of participating teams. Whether you’re a longtime player or joining a team for the first time, there’s a place for you at MSA.

Registration links open in PlayMetrics. Check your selected program for current availability, fees, and deadlines.

Basic League Rules

MSA Coed Softball follows USA Softball slow-pitch rules, with additional league-specific regulations established by the Marshalltown Softball Association.

Player eligibility
All players must be at least 16 years old.
Team composition
Teams should aim for an equal number of male and female players. Women must make up 50% to 70% of the lineup, with a maximum combination of 7 women and 3 men.
Minimum players
Teams must have at least 8 players to begin a game.
Game length
7 innings with a 55-minute time limit. No new inning may begin after the time limit expires.
Run rule
20 runs after 3 innings, 15 runs after 4 innings, or 10 runs after 5 innings.
Official softballs
Female batters use an official 11-inch slow-pitch softball. Male batters use the DeBeer F14 Clincher 14-inch softball. MSA provides all game balls.
Batting count
Batters begin with a 1–1 count and receive one courtesy foul ball with two strikes. A second foul ball with two strikes results in an out.
Strike zone
A strike mat is used behind home plate. A pitched ball that lands on either home plate or the strike mat is a strike. A pitch that misses both is a ball.
Home run limits
A Division: 4 home runs per game. B Division: 2 home runs per game. The league’s home run equalizer rule applies.
Bat approval
All bats must have an official ASA or USA Softball certification stamp and be approved for league play. Every bat must be inspected and stickered by an MSA Board Member with the current year’s approval sticker before use in a league game. Bats without the current year’s approval sticker are not permitted.
Footwear
Athletic shoes or rubber cleats are required. Metal cleats are prohibited.
Rosters & waivers
All players must be listed on their team’s official roster and have a completed waiver on file.
Sportsmanship
Respect for umpires, opponents, teammates, and spectators is required. Unsportsmanlike conduct may result in ejection or suspension.

For complete rules, regulations, and registration requirements, review the official league packet on the Handouts page before the season begins.

Before your first game

Player Waivers

All players must complete the appropriate participant waiver before playing. If you participate on multiple teams or in more than one MSA league, you only need to complete the waiver once for the current MSA league year.

Minor Waiver

For participants under 18. A parent or legal guardian must complete the waiver.

Stay Ready. Stay Connected.

Managers are responsible for having their team ready at its scheduled game time and making sure all players have completed their waivers. Players and managers should review the current league packet and schedule before the season begins.

Check MSA’s website, PlayMetrics, and Facebook for schedules, standings, registration information, weather notices, tournaments, and season updates. Review your schedule before heading to the complex each week.
